Area Level Humorous Speech and Evaluation Speech Competition

Hi..

I have half an hour to update this blog. Really couldn’t help it as many pending works are waiting. However, I manage to squeeze my time for a few minutes just to share with you the latest and important event we had recently.

Last Friday, as I mentioned in my post previously, the outstanding and auspicious Toastmasters event was held here in ULPL. To our surprised, there were many Toastmasters members from the different clubs attended the event even though they have to pay RM18 for the ticket. Sadly, only a few members from Politeknik Kota Kinabalu Toastmasters Club came to witness the event. However, thank you very much to our Deputy Director of Academic, Hajah Norehan for spending her precious time to be with us during the night.

What can I say? It was really fantastic! All the contestant show their best talent in delivering their speech as well as giving a constructive evaluation. Here, everything we learnt in Toastmasters Club will be applied and tested. We couldn’t stop laughing as the stories they shared were really tickled our funny bones.

As I joined this humorous competition in Area Level for the third time, it was definitely deepen my experience in public speaking. I could realize that it was a great and memorable moment. I became more steady in giving my speech as well as I can convey the message with the aids of props, body and hand gestures and of course by using vocal variety. I have done my best during the competition and I still can’t believe that I could win the FIRST RUNNER UP position. Oh my God…It was the third time I joined the competition and it was also the third time I won the same position. Thank you God…Madam Chow also won the FIRST RUNNER UP for Evaluation Speech Contest. Congratulations to her and myself as well…hehe..

My hope, may our Deputy Director open up her mind to give PKKTMC a steady place in this organization so that we could have enough members to run the training meeting every two weeks. She never attended any of Toastmaster training meeting before and we really hope by witnessing the event, she could most probably support all of our activities and encourage the lecturers to join the meeting. I wondered and confused…most of the lecturers admitted that they are really weak in this language, however they don’t want to make any single effort to improve it even though the platform is already there. It took me five years to overcome my fear in speaking in public but that it not the important thing at all. What I want to share here is, I will proudly say to anyone who wanted to ask me this question? “What is your big achievement in PKKTMC?” My answer will be, “I can conduct the lectures in my class 100% in English now after five years joining toastmaster which was impossible to me once."

Well, it’s up to them. It’s up to the management. We will continue to carry on our journey in Toastmasters and keep on enriching ourselves with the knowledges. The future is in our hands.

PKKTMC Humo

Last night, for the very first time PKK Toastmaster Club held the Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest. All the committee members were participating including myself. It was a great event and I really enjoyed it. My speech title was “How to win ‘her’ heart?” Her here means my mother in law’s heart. I forced my husband to witness the contest with the reason that my topic was all about her mother. And because of that topic he agreed to come and support me.

There were 4 of us competing for the humorous speech. Mdm Chow shared with us what the difference between men and ladies while shopping. It was really true and originally based on her experience. Well done to her. For Adrian, it’s very funny when he started his speech with a song from Jimmy Palikat entitled Tanak Kampung. His speech title was “A modern rubber tapper village boy”. That was quite funny too. Last but least, the contestant was Hatimi Mudin from JKM. I really impressed with her progress. She manage to deliver her speech humorously even though that was her first attempt. Congratulations to all the participant.

For the evaluation contest, we also have 4 contestants. All of them did a very good and constructive evaluations. Well, the test speaker Chicha really impressed the audiences with her speech title “Who is in charge”. The speech was all about how to become a good leader and not a boss. I love how Chicha delivered her speech. Really funny and she really absorbed what Toastmaster thought her. She use her vocal variety to emphasize the messages.

Hehe…Conratulations to the winners… Both of the champions will represent PKKTMC for the Area K level contest which will be held on the 7th of October 2011 at the same venue which is at Auditorium, ULPL, PKK.

Mmm…I hope I can do better. Need to exaggerate more and use some props to add the impact of my speech. Some of the feedback I got from the audiences, they said my story was really interesting and humor . I really appreciated their comments. Okay…see you then…adios..

I am a Toastmaster!

Finally, our English Enhancement Program (EEP) was officially ended. I must thanked Mr. Chin for giving us(Eta and me) an opportunity to join the program even though the program is actually for new lecturers. I have attended similar course in Politeknik as well and we called it EEC (Effective English Communication) organised by JPA. Through the program I was able to get to know new Politeknik staff especially the Director’s daughter. Mmm...this saying is really true, “Don’t judge the book by its cover”. Previously, we assumed that the Director’s daughter was a snobbish person, but actually she doesn’t. She is really friendly and generous with her smile.

Mm..the flow of the program was quite boring on the 1^st and 2^nd day. But on the 3^rd day, I began to feel the excitement because we had a public speaking session. And to make it more interesting, there will be an award waiting for the best speaker. All participants were given 3 minutes to deliver their speech. I really like this part because I can show to them the skills that Toastmaster had taught me all this while. This is one of the reason why we(Eta and me) volunteered ourselves to join this course at a very first place. I do not mean to look down on the other participants; I knew that most of them were very good in English especially the Director’s daughter and one of her friend. Both of them have been studied in overseas once and it was undeniable that both of them speak very fluently in English. But, after all, we took this as a challenge because we will never have this opportunity to speak in front of non-toastmaster member.

I choose PPSMTI as my topic. I choose this topic simply because of it relates to all lecturers who attended the course. My speech goes like this:

“I was reading a book last few weeks and really attracted to this quote, “It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness”. There was a deep meaning behind it. This is how I am going to relate it with my daily life especially in my profession as a lecturer. I realized that, by hook or by crook by now we’re supposed to conduct our lecture in English.

To be plain, for me it is a very challenging task. I often seek for excuses why I can’t really implement this method and those excuses were most likely blaming the management for simply commanding us to change the way we’re teaching now drastically, or blaming the students because they don’t understand English rather than try to make small effort to improve myself first. There are questions that keep buzzing in my ears? How to start? Where to start? Do I have the boldness? What if the students laugh at me? And etc..

However, there are 3 things that made me change my view. Firstly, Politeknik students need help. If you as a lecturer couldn’t help them then who else in the outside world could help them? We need to transform ourselves first before we can transform our student. In future, I’m sure we would be proud of them for being able to compete with the University students.

Secondly, the reference books are mostly written in English. Why do we need to double our task? We can convey the knowledge directly to the student without translating it. If we conduct the lesson in Malay than we have to translate the whole books in order to make the lecture more effective. Why do we need to do so if we have an option to choose? Ask yourself?

Thirdly, it’s my personal gain. I’ve set in mind that by conducting the lecture in English, it will benefit me as well as the students themselves. I can enhance and improve my communication skill where as the students could experience the new environment of their lecture class. Love your profession. Let your passion drive your profession. So it is a win win situation.

What I’m going to emphasize here is that I’m urging my fellow intelligent friends to light a candle by improving ourselves and enlighten others especially our students. A man was picking up starfish on the beach and threw them into the sea. Another man approached him and asked, “There are thousand of starfish here, and how are you going to return them all to their place?” The other man smiled and answered, “At least, I’ve made a difference to this one…” and continued throwing the starfish into the sea. So, why are we here, it is just simply because we are the chosen one…For me, I can. Therefore, I will…how about you. Thank you…”

Surprisingly, I received an awesome response from the audiences. Marcus, one of the facilitator then told me that he does not have comment at all. He said that I just prove to them that I am a Toastmaster indeed. Thanks God, I did well. In the evening, he asked for my name and my IC number. Eta said, “Daily, I am sure that you will be the best speaker”. Well, let me shorten how the story goes...During the closing on Thursday evening, Eta announced (she was the emcee of the day) the best speaker. “The best speaker award goes to.....jeng jeng jeng...( My heart was unsettled and I heard my name was uttered by some of the audience)...Nor Haniza Bte Mustafar Kamar”. Mmm...at that moment, it was really hard for me to control my face expression because of my high expectation. I could see how proud the Director while giving the certificate to his own daughter. It was a lesson for me. I acted that I was not disturbed by the result and I went to meet Nor Haniza and congratulated her. I told her, she deserved to receive the award than me. She smiled and said to me that she was not trained in Toastmaster and admitted that there was a slight different between a Toastmaster member and non-Toastmaster member.

During the evening tea after the closing....Eta says “They took into account these 4 days to determine who is the best speaker” She told me that simply because she realized what was going on. I nodded. It was over then. We then went to the Seminar Room to take our bags and modules. Inside the room, we met with Marcus. Our final conversation with Marcus was really uplifted my spirit again and clarified everything. “Daily, I have something to tell you...Actually you’re the one who won the best speaker award but since you joined this course is counted as your KUDAPAN course only so you’re disqualified. The best speaker award is given to the 2^nd best speaker” So in the end, we achieved our mission, to prove that we are the Toastmasters...END..

I coudn't believe it..

Yesterday, K.Jumriani passed me the phone, she said “En. Sahul is on the line”..We were all laughing because as far as I know, K.Jum was trying to play with me, further more…she’s smiling.. I approached her with an astonishing face.. “Really K.Jum?” I asked her a few times because I don’t believe it at all. How could on earth, En.Sahul, our X-Deputy Directy, is calling me? K.Jum nodded but still with a grinning face. I took up the phone..

“Hello, I’m Sahul…do u still remember me?” Yea…I recognized his voice..

Actually, En.Sahul called me because he wanted me to issue a certified letter for him to certify that he is one of the PKK Toastmasters members. I said to him, I’m not eligible to issue the letter because any letter must be from Toastmasters International. But he said, I’m the president so I can do that…The letter is actually for his promotion purposed as a supporting certificate.

Mm…during the end of our conversation, he asked me to post it immediately…
To be honest, I want to say to him and all the x-toastmasters members.. “Serve them right” Because finally they(not all the members) realize how important Toastmaster is…J

Humorous and Evaluation Speech Contest 2009

It's all about contest again.......

The contest was held in Ahmad Nifsu Theaterete, UMS. There were 2 representatives from our club which were very familiar to me none other that, Joan Wang Yee Juen and her husband Jason. Their performance was marvelous and fantastic. I could see how they progress so fast. When I witnessed Joan’s presentation, I was amazed; she looks like a professional speaker. I almost couldn’t discern her nervousness while presenting. Mm…I’ve been experienced that situation before, I’ve joined the previous contest, however, I noticed that, this year contest was so challenging. There were many great participants representing their club. Almost all of them have shown their skills as a speaker and most importantly, they have proven to the audience how Toastmasters thought them…

I also like very much how Jason presented his evaluation. All this while in our regular training meeting, I seldom saw him presenting the evaluation so effective and relax without the ‘ahhs’, ‘urm’…but during the contest, the evaluation was perfectly presented almost without that ‘ahhs’, ‘urm’, etc. Congratulation!!! You deserve to win trophy.

Well, I’ll try to contest next year…I hope I can ready for that…huhu…

SMS-My humorous speech(MBJ speech as well)

This is a CAT and this is FISH. Now tell me, who likes CATs? And who likes FISH? Who doesn’t like CAT? Good! I hate cats maybe because of their extremely pampered habit. I don’t have any chemistry relationship with cats. May be because I am a pampered girl too that’s why I can’t get along with them. Positive and positive can’t mix up, otherwise it will repel one another. Anyway, I like fish. Even though I don’t have any fish in my house , I do understand their feelings. Compared to cats, if fish get mad or angry, they can’t show it off to people. They’re very low profile. They only can wait to be feed (fed) and never sleep. But if cats get bored or angry, they will scratch your sofa, table, and even you. But if they want something, they will cat walk towards you and start meowing...That’s why I hate cats…

Ladies and gentlemen, fellow toastmasters, good evening…

Sometimes as a human being, we can’t run away from encountering the same situation just like a fish does. Sometime, you want to express your emotion or you want to say something but you fail because of certain circumstances. May be at home, workplace or in restaurants You really want to shout to that person but he or she couldn’t hear you. For me, I often experience that situation while driving…Just imagine, the car is like an aquarium and people inside it are just like fish. No matter how loud you want to shout, no body could hear you unless you open the window and shout directly to the person in another car but make sure they open their window too. It’s not that easy…huh…furthermore, the other car keep on honking you. You became pissed off but couldn’t show it to the person…how you’re going to solve this? I was thinking on how nice it will be if my car can speak out. So next time when somebody keeps on honking me, my car will shout, “SHUT UP!” But, sound ridiculous…If I propose this to the Prime Minister, I believe it will be rejected. So I keep on thinking, thinking again until one day…

This happened when I wanted to make a U-turn. I was really tired of queuing up and pressing the clutch because I was caught in a traffic jam. Suddenly, I saw from my right side mirror one blue car moving fast to overtake me. I was so angry. I’ve been waiting for my turn for so long and that car was simply trying to make a short cut. No way!!! I didn’t give chance and drove even closer to the car in front of me. But the car was stubborn and didnt want to surrender. I looked at him but he pretended to be so serious so that I’ll give way. I didn’t care, I moved forward even closer, thinking he will give up, but he passed over me and even overtook the car in front of me. I was so angry but I couldn’t express it to that person. At the moment, this idea popped up in my mind. I want to invent ‘SMS’ which stand for Super Multipurpose Screen and the main function of this SMS is to display words and emotion that can be seen from the other cars.

This is how AMSD can help. Imagine you’re driving on the right lane with an appropriate speed. Suddenly, when you look at the rear mirror you saw a DMAX tailing you in a very close position. Have you ever done this to others? Or have someone done like this to you? If you’re the victim, I believe you’ll just ignore the car and continue moving on or you’ll switch to the other lane like I always do. But, if I have SMS, I’ll just switch on the button and the screen will appear at my rear window and display these words and emotion.

“HEI!!! KEEP THE CORRECT DISTANCE FROM ME? I’M PAYING THE ROADTAX TOO!”

I’m sure the car will slow down a little bit and realize that he his wrong and if the car still want to overtake me, they can use the other lane. Why? I’m driving with the maximum speed allowed by JPJ. So, they can’t blame me either because in this particular case, they’re wrong by driving faster than me.

Second situation is, imagine you’re in a hurry and now you’re on the right lane. So in contrast with the 1^st situation, now you’re driving at the back and the car in front of you is damn slow may be around 50 km/h to 60 km/h. Sometimes, even though you highlight the car, the car will just ignore you and continue on driving with that slow irritating speed. May be, they think that you’re just showing off. So, you need to make them understand that you’re really in hurry. If I have an SMS I’ll highlight the car and display my AMSD with these words written backward.“EXCUSE ME! EXCUSE ME! I AM IN A HURRY”If the driver still ignores you and driving even slower, I’ll overtake him/her using the left lane. In the meantime, my SMS will display these words and emotion. “NEXT TIME, DON’T DRIVE YOUR CAR. JUST WALK!! EVEN a TURTLE is FASTER THAN YOU, HUH!!”

SMS can also be used for entertaining purposes. Imagine this 3^rd situation, while you’re driving steadily suddenly you saw a sporty car beside you which is driven by a handsome man or a beautiful lady. Just switch on your SMS and display these words. But it depends, you can change it according to your wish…“WOW! NICE CAR!!! CALL ME, 013-0001111 (“,)” (Strictly prohibited to those who had married)

Ladies and gentlemen, fellow toastmasters,

SMS is only my illusion. If SMS does really exist, they will be War of Words on the road. We don’t need that thing if we have courtesy on the road and not selfish while driving. We have rules and law to be followed and not simply driving like ghost. Remember, drive carefully…you can make a different. Back to your Toastmaster of the Evening.

LaSt bUt nOt lEasT...

Last night, 24 June 2009 was PKKTMC final training meeting for the term 2008-2009. As a president, I have reflected on all the things that I have done for this club. I evaluated my own performance and wondered if I have given my best to this club? Looking at the goals we have achieved this term saddened my heart. We have only managed to achieve 6 out of 10 goals. I felt frustrated. This is because I felt that I personally have not contributed any goal to this club in terms of delivering speeches. If only I complete my CL or redo my CC manual speech maybe our club could maintain the previous achievement which was 7 out of 10 goals. Maybe to some people maintaining the previous goals is nothing much, but for me and for those who have worked hard to make this club running it is a big difference. There is much more to do the next term.When I was appointed to take the challenge as a president, I was a bit reluctant because I was afraid I could not make it. I felt inadequate; my knowledge about English was limited. As if I could predict the future, some of the members of this club became demoralized and did not come to the meeting ever since I took up this post. What can I do? Sometimes, some members seem to avoid me. Would I be losing all my friends just because I am quite persuasive as a President or because I am too active in Toastmaster Club?

Nevertheless;

Thank you to Toastmasters Club for giving me such a great opportunity to learn and engage myself as a president. I’ll treasure this memorable experience. To our new President, Joan Wang Yee Juen, CC,CL, all the best to you. I believe that you can bring this club to a greater height.

Api2 Toastmaster Club Training Meeting

Last night we went to Api-Api Toastmaster Club training meeting. It was a fascinating experience as we enjoyed the session so much. The warming up session was conducted zanily. We had to pass the message using the body language we got from our fellow member on the left and continue to pass it on to the member on our right side. The last person will have to guess what the message was all about. It was so funny when everyone guessing that the answer was ‘No Smoking’ but actually the answer was ‘Cigarette on the floor’. Mmm…a very good idea! I can implement this idea in our club..:)

Another session that attracted me was the Table Topic Session. The idea of presenting the Table Topic Session by Table Topic Master was so fresh. TM Marie Loh, made the audience felt excited to answer when there were little prizes provided for those who had tried to answer.

Tonight another toastmaster training meeting will be held in my own club. I’d just prepared the materials that we are going to use. I am so tired…however, meeting have to go on. Only 4 members from our club will attend the meeting as most of them are on leave. But then, we will have another 5 guests from other club to join the meeting.

Well…that’s all for now…

It is not too bad and never been too late to join Toastmaster

I was surprised when Minir approached me and say, “I want to talk about something that you’ve been persuaded me to join for 2 years.” I didn’t get what he means. Then he says, “When is your next toastmaster training meeting?” “Hah? Am I dreaming? Is this a reality?” I couldn’t believe with what I heard. After kept on persuading him for almost 3 years, at last he moved on to the first step. Of course he said that it was all because of his wife’s decision. He wanted his wife to be better in communication skills and when his wife says, “Yes” then Minir came to see me, but I knew that deep inside his heart he was interested to join as well. However, the issue was when the meeting held on Thursday night. Minir said that they couldn’t come to attend the meeting during that day because their free time was on Tuesday@Wednesday.

Well, it is not too bad and never been too late to join Toastmaster. Congratulations to Minir and his wife. Both of them will be our PKKTMC members to be…:)

PKKTMC Training Meeting 21th May 2009

Ya, can't wait for tonight meeting. I don't know why, but seem like I've been addicted to this educative program..

I'll be the Toastmaster of the Evening and at the same time, I might play the role of Humor Master..I've prepared the warming up session and I hope the rest of the members will enjoy.

I am sure there will be few people coming, at least we'll have new faces despite of seeing the same faces all over again almost every meeting.

Anyway, thank you everybody for the supports. This will be the most challenging moment for me but, I realize that I've learned and improved much during this moment..(^____^)

PKKTMC-is dying

“Fellow members and guests, I was reluctant when being nominated as a president this term of 2008-2009 because I was thinking that I’m not worthy, I am not good enough, and I don’t have the confident to lead this club, to bring this club to a higher level or achievements. What if under my supervision this club turns to upside-down? What if under my leadership, this club unable to achieve targets and goals or even maintain the previous achievements? Where I am going to hide myself? But I believe…In Toastmasters; I am well educated that we’re working as a team. I accept this responsibility as a challenge and I believe that I’ll be guided and supported by our club mentors, immediate past president and none other than you as a PKKTMC members. I’m hoping that, with a strong support from you, we can achieve our target this term which is 10 out 10 goals or at least 7 out 10 goals. I do really need your cooperation, not to help me but to help yourself to go out of your comfort zone, by making a different to yourself, to be better in all aspects especially in communication skill because by helping yourself, you’re helping me to help our club for better achievements this term, definitely.”

I still remember my speech when I was installed to be a president this term. I was very passionate and can’t wait to be the captain of this ship. It was a big challenge for me but I accepted it willingly because I want to enhance my communication skill as well as to cultivate my leadership skill. Toastmaster had provided me a track to go through and now it’s up to me to follow that track because I know, I can reach the top by using that track. I’ve completed my ten projects and I should be proud of myself with that progress. There is a long journey waits ahead and I’m committed to be part of this journey until the finishing line, of course.

But, what makes me so discourage now? I was in the middle of the demoralized toastmaster club. I have low attendances almost every meeting, I had to invite those people to come even though I knew that I’ll receive a negative responds from them, I have to prepared all the materials before the meetings commence and the most important thing is to make sure the meeting is run with whatever condition I might encountered. I never assumed it was a burden for me because I understand that by doing so it will benefit me. I can’t deny that, I’m improving much on my writing for what I’ve done in Toastmaster. I’d practiced impromptu speech every week in Toastmaster meeting. But, it’s not enough, the more I learn, the more weaknesses I found in me. Mm…

Last Thursday, I could not bear my tears. I met one of the committed Toastmaster members; I expressed my feeling how sad I was. I told her about the rejections I accepted every week. I told her that how I pretended to be so tolerance and considerate person each time they said, “Sorry, I couldn’t attend. I’ve something to do tonight”. Then I’ll response, “Oh..it’s okay, see you next week then”. I bear in mind that may be she/he was truly busy this time and perhaps next week they could attend. But, the following week, I’ll encounter the same situation, same response and even same people. Oh…why it is hard for them to just tell me the truth that they’re no longer interested in joining the meeting. And I’ll quit...

That’s why I’m saying that PKKTMC is dying. And it’s hard for me to admit that it PKKTMC is dying under my leadership. It shows that I am not a good leader. I don’t have the strategies and I am not good enough. May be I’ll just conclude that, they’re choosing the wrong person this term…

Dear PKKTMC members, I am sorry. I am not a good leader. I believe that the next president could bring this club better next term...till then..

We Can. Therefore, We Will

An old adage says, you fell in love with someone at your first sight. It’s true and I believe most of us here might have been experience it but it is not necessarily we end up that relationship with marriage. Along the journey we try to know each other closer. If we’re meant to each other, then the relationships will certainly heading to marriage life.

I remember this story, a man kept on collecting cockles in the beach and throwing it away into the sea. Another man approached him and says, “There are thousands of cockles here, how you’re going to return them all to their place?” The other man smiled and answered, “At least, I’ve make a different to this one…” and continued throwing the cockles in his palm.

Therefore, let’s realize our potential and strive to be better. Anything is possible if we bear in mind, “WE CAN. THEREFORE WE WILL”
